The airline confirmed to Turkish Media that the aircraft received a lightning strike shortly before landing however did not comment any further.
Turkish Airlines told The Aviation Herald on Jan 26th 2013, that lightning hit the right hand engine, when the aircraft descended through 8000 feet on approach to Izmir. The rear cowl of the engine near the end of the duct caught fire, which remained on the exterior of the engine for several minutes and was visually confirmed by the crew. Although there was no abnormal indication of any engine parameter or any fire indication, due to the visual confirmation of fire the crew decided to action the engine fire checklist, shut the engine down and discharged both fire bottles, after which the fire was extinguished. The aircraft completed a safe single engine landing, as the engine was secured and there was no fire the passengers could disembark normally. The right hand engine's fan cowl, common nozzle assembly, thrust reverser proximity sensors and engine electronic control were found damaged and were replaced.
