An American Airlines Boeing 787-8, registration N816AA performing flight AA-912 from Santiago (Chile) to Miami,FL (USA), was enroute at FL360 about 160nm northnorthwest of Santiago when the crew initiated an emergency descent due to the loss of cabin pressure. The aircraft levelled off at 9000 feet about 5 minutes later (average rate of descent 5400 fpm) and returned to Santiago for a safe landing on runway 17R about 75 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Santiago about 15 hours after landing back.
