A Loganair Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A, registration G-LMTD performing flight LM-78 from Aberdeen,SC to Shetland Islands,SC (UK), was enroute at FL150 about 50nm north of Aberdeen when the crew decided to return to Aberdeen due to an unusual burning odour on board. The aircraft landed safely back in Aberdeen about 30 minutes after departure.

Met Services and NATS conclude the odour was caused by the Canadian Wildfires, the odour of which were taken to the UK by the jetstream.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 16 hours after landing back.
