A United Boeing 787-8, registration N27901 performing flight UA-769 from Chicago O'hare,IL (USA) to Barcelona,SP (Spain), was enroute at FL390 about 260nm west of St. John's when the crew decided to turn around and return to Chicago due to a cooling problem that might develop into a cabin pressurization problem. The aircraft descended to FL340 for the return and landed safely back in Chicago about 3:10 hours after turning around.

A passenger reported: "6 hour flight to nowhere - on reaching Airspace over Nova Scotia, performed a U-turn and returned to ORD. Any idea what that was about?"

NAV Canada reported: "A United Airlines Inc. Boeing 787-8 (N27901/UAL769) from Chicago/O’Hare, IL (KORD) to Barcelona/Josep Tarradellas, Spain (LEBL) advised they needed to turn around due to a cooling system issue that could turn into a pressurization issue. They advised below FL350 and it should not be an issue."

A replacement Boeing 787-8 registration N27903 reached Barcelona with a delay of 24 hours.
