A Delta Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N388DA performing flight DL-838 from Salt Lake City,UT to New York JFK,NY (USA), was descending towards New York when the aicraft was struck by lightning. The aircraft cotninued for a safe landing on JFK's runway 22L.

A passenger reported the aircraft had been diverted to Salt Lake City on their flight from San Diego,CA (USA) to JFK for a crew change. On approach to JFK the aircraft was hit by lightning with a loud bang being heard and flames shooting out of the right hand engine (CFM56). The aircraft continued for a normal landing, no emergency services around. The passengers were told it had been a lightning strike.

The aircraft remained on the ground in JFK for about 32.5 hours before returning to service.
