An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N972NN performing flight AA-1958 from Columbus,OH to Phoenix,AZ (USA) with 175 people on board, was climbing out of Columbus' runway 28L when the right hand engine (CFM56) ingested a number of geese and suffered from repeated compressor stalls emitting bangs and streaks of flames. The aircraft levelled off at 3000 feet, the crew shut the engine down and returned the aircraft to Columbus for a safe landing on runway 28L about 25 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N984NN is estimated to reach Phoenix with a delay of about 7:15 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Columbus about 4 hours after landing back.

On Apr 24th 2023 the FAA reported: "AIRCRAFT STRUCK A BIRD ON TAKEOFF, ENGINE NO. 2 CAUGHT FIRE AND LOST POWER AND RETURNED TO CMH, COLUMBUS, OH.", the damage was rated substantial and the occurrence was rated an accident.
