An Allegiant Air Airbus A320-200, registration N261NV performing flight G4-989 from St. Petersburg,FL to Niagara Falls,NY (USA) with 158 people on board, was climbing out of St. Petersburg's runway 36 when the crew stopped the climb at 10,000 feet after the right hand engine (CFM56) received a bird strike. The aircraft returned to St. Petersburg for a safe landing on runway 36 about 35 minutes after departure.

The FAA reported: "AIRCRAFT STRUCK A BIRD ON DEPARTURE CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE NUMBER 2 ENGINE, ST PETERSBURG-CLEARWATER, FLORIDA."

The aircraft is still on the ground in St. Petersburg about 32 hours after landing back.
