An El Al Boeing 787-9, registration 4X-EDI performing flight LY-5 from Tel Aviv (Israel) to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was climbing out of Tel Aviv's runway 26 when the crew stopped the climb at about 14000 feet due to decreasing oil quantity indications for the left hand engine (Trent 1000) and finally a low engine oil pressure. The crew performed the relevant checklist, reduced engine thrust, the indication however persisted prompting the crew to shut the engine down. The aircraft dumped fuel and returned to Tel Aviv for a safe landing on runway 26 about 45 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 787-9 registration 4X-EDE reached Los Angeles with a delay of about 7:45 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground about 42 hours after landing back.

According to information The Aviation Herald received a leaking oil seal in the left engine's gear box was identified as cause of the loss of oil.
