A UTAir Boeing 737-500, registration VP-BXZ performing flight UT-596 from Usinsk to Moscow Vnukovo (Russia) with 78 passengers and 7 crew, was enroute near Syktyvkar when the generator of the APU failed prompting the crew to divert to Syktavkar for a safe landing in snowfall and low visibility.

Rosaviatsia reported the aircraft was operating under minimum equipment list requirements with the APU supplying power to the left hand electrical busses. The APU shut down automatically.
