An Air Baltic Bombardier C-Series CS-300, registration YL-CSI performing flight BT-233 from Riga (Latvia) to Dusseldorf (Germany) with 111 passengers, landed on Dusseldorf's runway 23L when upon touchdown a ground observer noticed (and took photo of) a faint line of smoke from the nose gear. The aircraft rolled out without further incident and taxied the apron.

The aircraft subsequently departed for the return flight BT-234 with 119 passengers on schedule, but needed to stop the climb at FL170 and return to Dusseldorf due to smoke in the nose gear wheel well. The aircraft landed safely back on Dusseldorf's runway 23L about 45 minutes after departure.

The airline stated: "Nose landing gear (NLG) shock strut hydraulic leak occurred during taxing or take-off. As landing gear retraction was conducted with a partly depleted NLG shock strut, the wheels which were still spinning touched NLG shock, deflated, stopper bar and emitted smoke in NLG wheel bay. ... After landing back in Dusseldorf airport, the aircraft was examined as per required industry standards. The aircraft returned back to airBaltic’s base in Riga on January 31 and since February 1 is fully back in service, performing scheduled operations."
