A United Airbus A320-200, registration N409UA performing flight UA-1189 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to San Jose Cabo (Mexico) with 146 passengers and 5 crew, was climbing out of San Francisco's runway 01L when the crew stopped the climb at 3000 feet, shut the right hand engine (V2527) down and returned to San Francisco for a safe landing on runway 28R about 10 minutes after departure.

The FAA reported: "AIRCRAFT DEPART SAN FRANCISO DURING THE INITIATIAL CLIMBE OUT REPORTED A BIRD STRIKE TO THE #2 ENGINE. PILOT REPORTED ENGINE OUT AND DECLARED AND EMERGENCY.", the damage as well as the highest degree of injuries was unknown (however, all occupants were listed with no injuries).

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in San Francisco 51 hours after landing back.
