A Sunwing Boeing 737-800, registration C-FUAA performing flight WG-601 from Cayo Coco (Cuba) to Toronto,ON (Canada) with 191 people on board, was enroute at FL390 about 160nm south of Raleigh/Durham,NC (USA) at 12:35L (17:35Z) when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence causing the airspeed to drop and the stick shaker to activate. The aircraft uncommandedly rolled about 20 degrees to the right and lost 1500 feet of altitude before the crew was able to regain control. The aircraft subsequently descended to FL350 and continued the flight to Toronto. On approach to Toronto the crew declared emergency and requested emergency services on stand by for the landing. The aircraft landed safely in Toronto about 90 minutes later.

The Canadian TSB reported a severe turbulence inspection found no faults, the aircraft was returned to service.
