A UPS United Parcel Service Boeing 767-300, registration N318UP performing flight 5X-108 from Anchorage,AK (USA) to Tokyo Narita (Japan) was climbing out of Anchorage's runway 07R when the right hand engine emitted loud bangs and streaks of flames prompting the crew to level off at 4000 feet MSL, then 5000 feet MSL. The crew subsequently decided to divert to Fairbanks,AK (USA), climbed the aircraft to 15,000 feet and landed safely on Fairbanks' runway 02L about 95 minutes after departure.

The NTSB reported the aircraft encountered an engine anomaly prompting the crew to divert to Fairbanks. The NTSB is looking into the occurrence.

Anchorage Airport reported one engine wasn't operating as it should.
