An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N834NN performing flight AA-412 from Hartford,CT to Miami,FL (USA) with 155 people on board, was enroute at FL360 about 60nm northnortheast of Norfolk,VA (USA) when the crew needed to shut the right hand engine (CFM56) down and diverted to Norfolk for a safe landing on runway 05 about 20 minutes after leaving FL360.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N358PW reached Miami with a delay of 4:45 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Norfolk about 53 hours after landing.
