An American Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration N130AN performing flight AA-2801 from Los Angeles,CA (USA) to Cancun (Mexico), was climbing out of Los Angeles' runway 25R when the crew stopped the climb at about 12,000 feet reporting an engine (V2533) failure. The crew shut the engine down and returned to Los Angeles for a safe landing on runway 25L about 25 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped briefly on the runway for an inspection by emergency services, then vacated the runway with emergency services in trail and taxied to the apron.

A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration N146AA reached Cancun with a delay of 16:45 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Los Angeles about 37 hours after landing.
