A Eurowings Airbus A320-200, registration D-ABNN performing flight EW-9552 from Dusseldorf (Germany) to Fuerteventura,CI (Spain), was climbing out of Dusseldorf's runway 23L when the crew stopped the climb at FL070 due to problems with the left hand engine (CFM56). The crew decided to divert to Cologne (Germany) for its longer runway, shut the engine down and landed safely on Cologne's runway 14L about 30 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported prior to departure a passenger and the passenger's luggage had to be offloaded causing a 50 minutes delay in departure. After the aircraft had finally taken off it appeared to climb slowly. The captain announced that the left hand engine was not performing as expected and needed to be shut down. As the runways in Dusseldorf were wet they were diverting to Cologne due to the longer runway available there. The aircraft landed on Cologne's runway 14L and taxied to a cargo apron, where the passengers disembarked and were bussed to the terminal. A replacement aircraft took the passengers to Fuerteventura, the captain of the replacement flight announced that the reason for the engine shut down of D-ABNN had been a low oil pressure indication.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration D-ABNT reached Fuerteventura with a total delay of about 6 hours.
