An Alitalia Airbus A320-200, registration EI-DSE performing flight AZ-1332 from Bologna to Palermo (Italy), was on approach to Palermo when another emergency in progress forced the aerodrome closed. The crew of EI-DSE subsequently declared emergency related to fuel and continued for a safe landing in Palermo.

Italy's ANSV reported that they rated the occurrence a serious incident after acquiring evidence and documents and opened a safety investigation.

On Apr 11th 2013 the ANSV reported in a review of 2012 investigations, that the aerodrome of Palermo had been closed due to a fuel leak from an aircraft parked on the apron, which required the involvement of emergency services. EI-DSE arriving at that time was sent into a holding pattern due to the closure of the aerodrome. A few minutes later the crew requested vectors to their alternate aerodrome, however, was told the airport would reopen shortly and thus was convinced to continue the hold. After some more time of holding the crew however needed to declare emergency and landed at Palermo although the aerodrome was still closed due to the fuel leak event. The ANSV investigation is working to properly assess the reasons for the crew to not divert and land at Palermo as well as determine how well the events, both fuel leak and hold/arrival of EI-DSE, was handled on the ground, especially the coordination of ground staff and those involved in flight operations.
