An Air Canada Embraer ERJ-175, registration C-FEKS performing flight AC-748 from Montreal,QC (Canada) to New York La Guardia,NY (USA) with 40 people on board, was on approach at 3000 feet in instrument meteorological conditions (tower reported cloud ceiling at 600 feet) at 17:34L (21:34Z), when the aircraft was cleared for the RNAV Y approach to La Guardia's runway 04 and to cross waypoint DNNIS at 1700 feet and 170 knots. The crew engaged the autoflight systems in approach mode and the aircraft began to descend passing 1700 feet about 2-3nm before the final approach fix and reaching 1000 feet one mile outside the final approach fix about one minute after being cleared to 1700 feet, at which point the final approach controller issued an altitude alert. The crew promptly went around, positioned for another approach and landed safely.

The Canadian TSB reported the airline conducts an investigation into the occurrence.
