An Aero Services Ilyhushin IL-76T freighter, registration EK-76300 performing a freight flight from Pointe Noire to Brazzaville (Congo) with 6 crew, was on approach to runway 05L at about 17:30L (16:30Z) when the aircraft clipped two strong branches of a large tree about 1080 meters ahead of the threshold runway 05L at about twice the height of local houses, clipped 6 smaller trees about 1015 meters ahead of the runway threshold at about the height of the houses and left first debris behind about 985 meters ahead of the runway threshold. The main wreckage came to rest about 870 meters before the runway threshold with debris to about 750 meters before the runway threshold. All crew perished in the accident, 26 people on the ground were killed as well, 14 people on the ground were taken to hospitals with injuries.

The local Red Cross confirmed 20 fatalities and reported up to 30 people are feared killed in the crash, 14 persons injured on the ground were taken to hospitals.

Congo's government officials reported that the aircraft landed on Brazzaville's runway 23R in bad weather at around 17:30L (16:30Z) but overran the end of the runway, broke through the airport perimeter fence, crossed a road, impacted multiple buildings and fell into a ravine about 1000 meters/0.54nm past the end of the runway. The brakes of the aircraft belonging to Trans Air Congo had failed, the crew attempted a go-around, the aircraft however did not climb out again. All 6 crew and 19 people on the ground were killed, the 14 injured were taken to hospitals.

Congo's President reported late Dec 1st that the Antonov cargo aircraft EK-7613000 belonging to Aero Service approached the aerodrome while a tornado and heavy thunderstorms were observed around the aerodrome, conditions thought to be unflyable for an aircraft, and came to rest several hundred meters outside the airport. 32 people lost their lives as result of the crash.

Trans Air Congo posted on their Facebook site, but not their official site, that they never used EK-76300.

The aircraft EK-76300 was owned and operated by Air Highnesses (Armenia), the aircraft - that had joined Air Highnesses in 2008 but had retained the paint scheme "HeavyLift Congo" of the former owner according to pictorial evidence in 2011 and was leased out in August 2011 - was flown by a mostly Armenian crew.

The Interstate Aviation Committee (MAK) reported on Feb 28th 2013, that they have received the flight data recorders of the crashed IL76 for readout on behalf of the Ministry of Transport of Congo. The recorders show mechanical damage as result of the impact forces. The MAK is working to reconstruct and download the data.

Brazzaville's Maya Maya Airport offers two runways 05L/23R and 05R/23L, both 3300 meters/10820 feet long and 45 meters/100 feet wide. The aerodrome is currently undergoing major upgrades including upgrades and changes of all ILS systems, runway 05R/23L is currently closed and only available as taxiway due to work in progress. Runway 05L offers an ILS approach, runway 23R VOR approaches.
