An Atlas Air Boeing 767-300, registration N649GT performing flight 5Y-8585 from Honolulu,HI (USA) to Guam (Guam) with 212 people on board, was in the initial climb out of Honolulu's runway 08R about to be handed off to departure when the crew declared emergency on tower frequency (and subsequently remained on tower frequency) reporting a right hand engine (CF6) failure due to repeated engine surges/compressor stalls with engine emitting bangs and streaks of flame. The aircraft stopped the climb at 2000 feet, the crew worked the severe engine damage checklist and shut the engine down. The crew requested an ILS approach to runway 08L, climbed to 3000 feet and landed safely on runway 08L about 30 minutes after departure.
