A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N908DE performing flight DL-241 from Atlanta,GA to Miami,FL (USA), was climbing out of Atlanta when the left hand engine lost power prompting the crew to shut the engine down. The aircraft returned to Atlanta for a safe landing on runway 10 about 50 minutes after departure.

A replacement MD-88 reached Miami with a delay 3 hours.

The NTSB reported post flight examination revealed a portion of the lower engine cowl was missing and there was a hole in the fan duct. No injuries occurred, an investigation has been opened.
