A Westjet Boeing 737-800, registration C-FWSE performing flight WS-1852 from Vancouver,BC (Canada) to Kahului,HI (USA), was enroute at FL340 about 190nm southwest of Vancouver about to enter the ETOPS portion of the flight, when the crew received a "APU DET INOP" and a "OVERHEAT DETECT" message together with Master Caution. The crew shut the APU down, the warnings intermittently cleared and returned however. The crew decided to return to Vancouver, entered a holding for 2 hours to burn off fuel and landed safely back in Vancouver about 3 hours after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration C-GWSZ reached Kahului with a delay of 5.5 hours.

The Canadian TSB reported that maintenance identified the APU tailpipe overheat detector loop had a higher electrical resistance than permitted. The APU overheat detector assembly and fire overheat element were replaced. A service difficulty report was filed.
