A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N906DE performing flight DL-1430 from Detroit,MI to Hartford,CT (USA) with 102 people on board, was enroute at FL350 about 110nm westsouthwest of Syracuse,NY (USA) when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (JT8D) down. The aircraft diverted to Syracuse for a safe landing on runway 10 about 20 minutes later.

The remainder of the flight and the return flight were cancelled. The passengers continued their journey to Hartford by bus.

Passengers reported there had been a loud bang.
