A Lan Chile Cargo Boeing 767-300, registration N312LA performing freight flight UC-1713 from Miami,FL (USA) to Vitoria,ES (Brazil), aborted the approach to Vitoria when the crew could not deploy landing flaps and decided to divert to Sao Paulo's Viracopos Airport, located about 400nm southwest of Vitoria, due to the longer runway available. The aircraft landed safely at Viracopos Airport at a higher than normal speed and taxied to the apron.

The runway was kept sterile for about 40 minutes to facilitate the emergency landing.

The airline reported the aircraft diverted to Viracopos, the assigned alternate aerodrome, due to operational necessities and landed with more than required minimum fuel reserve remaining.

The aircraft was able to depart Viracopos again after about 3 hours on the ground and continued its schedule to Santiago (Chile).
