An American Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration N273AY performing flight AA-1496 from Philadelphia,PA (USA) to San Juan (Puerto Rico), was climbing through 11,000 feet out of Philadelphia when the crew reported an unusual odour in the cabin, stopped the climb and returned to Philadelphia for a safe landing on runway 27L about 30 minutes after departure. There were no injuries.

A replacement Airbus A330-200 registration N283AY reached San Juan with a delay of 10.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Philadelphia about 30 hours after landing back.
