A JAC Japan Air Commuter de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration JA-849C performing flight 3X-3745 from Kagoshima to Yakushima (Japan) with 38 people on board, had landed on Yakushima's runway 32 and was about to turn around near the northwest end of the runway and backtrack the runway to vacate the runway via the only exit to the apron about mid runway when a private helicopter holding short of the runway waiting to enter the runway and depart actually took off.

Japan's Ministry of Transport rated the occurrence a serious incident stating there was risk of a collision on the runway and opened an investigation. The minimum distance between the aircraft was less than 500 meters/0.27nm horizontally.
