A Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 787-9, registration HZ-ARA performing flight SV-3835 from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Madinah (Saudi Arabia) with about 280 people on board, had departed Kuala Lumpur with a delay of about 17 hours and was enroute at FL360 over the Bay of Bengal when the crew descended the aircraft to FL200 and diverted to Bangalore (India) for a safe landing more than an hour later. The runway was closed for about 45 minutes in preparation for the landing.

A replacement Onur Air Airbus A330-200 registration TC-OCN continued the flight and reached Madinah with a total delay of 32 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Bangalore about 44 hours after landing.

The airport reported the aircraft diverted due to a technical problem. Due to unavailability of suitable parking bays and bad weather at Chennai (India) it was decided to divert the aircraft to Bangalore. Some airport sources claim the aircraft suffered engine (GEnx) trouble.
