A Ryanair Boeing 737-800, registration EI-FID performing flight FR-8513 from Porto (Portugal) to Birmingham,EN (UK), departed Porto's runway 17 and was in the initial climb when ATC initiated a runway inspection due to a bird strike. The aircraft levelled off at 5000 feet, entered a hold to wait for the runway inspection to be completed, the crew declared PAN PAN while in the hold explaining they had received a bird strike into one of the engines (CFM56). ATC reported a number of small birds were recovered from the runway. The aircraft returned to Porto for a safe landing on runway 17 about 30 minutes after departure.

The aircraft returned to service after 19.5 hours on the ground.
