A Swiss International Airlines Airbus A340-300, registration HB-JMI performing flight LX-288 from Zurich (Switzerland) to Johannesburg (South Africa), was descending through about FL160 towards Johannesburg when the outboard left hand engine (CFM56) suffered vibrations and excessive exhaust gas temperatures prompting the crew to shut the engine down and discharged a fire bottle. The aircraft continued for a safe landing on Johannesburg's runway 03R about 17 minutes later.

South Africa's CAA reported on Oct 29th 2019, that the crew shut the engine down and discharged the fire extinguisher as precautionary measure following "irregular vibrations" and increasing EGT. The crew declared PAN PAN and continued for a safe landing with emergency services on stand by.

The occurence aircraft remained on the ground in Johannesburg until Jun 16th 2019, then positioned back to Zurich and returned to service.
