A United Boeing 737-800, registration N79541 performing flight UA-1554 from Washington National,DC to San Francisco,CA (USA), was enroute at FL360 about 140nm eastsoutheast of Denver,CO (USA) when the crew decided to divert to Denver advising a passenger had visited the aft lavatory and was now locked in, the lavatory door could no longer be opened. The aircraft landed on Denver's runway 35R about 30 minutes later. Emergency services boarded the aircraft and "convinced" the lavatory door to open thus releasing the passenger.

The airline confirmed a lavatory door malfunctioned trapping a female passenger inside the lavatory. After the landing the passenger was safely released from the lavatory.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N73270 continued the flight and reached San Francisco with a delay of of about 2:45 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground about 18.5 hours after landing.
