A Mount Cook Airlines Avion de Transport Regional ATR-72-500 on behalf of Air New Zealand, flight NZ-5061 from Christchurch to Invercargill (New Zealand) with 46 people on board, was descending towards Invercargill when the crew aborted the approach reporting they needed to shut down an engine. The aircraft positioned for another approach and landed safely.

A passenger said the captain announced an engine was no longer responding to control inputs and needed to be shut down.

The airline confirmed the aircraft experienced problems with the controls related to one of the engines.
