A Fedex Federal Express McDonnell Douglas MD-11, registration N628FE performing freight flight FX-5277 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Memphis,TN (USA) with 4 crew, was enroute at FL310 about 200nm northeast of Gander,NL (Canada) when the crew received a tail mounted engine (PW4460) oil filter bypass indication. Approximately 30 minutes later autopilot 1 and autothrottles disconnected due to thrust roll back and the aircraft entered a climb. The crew re-engaged the automation, corrected the altitude and observed low RPM indication for the tail mounted engine, in addition the oil pressure was indicating zero for the engine. The crew shut the engine down, descended to FL280 and decided to divert to Boston. Once reaching the top of descent the crew declared emergency and continued for a safe landing in Boston about 2:20 hours after the onset of trouble.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance replaced the engine for investigation.
