A Commutair Embraer ERJ-145 on behalf of United, registration N14198 performing flight C5-4961/UA-4961 from Montreal,QC (Canada) to Newark,NJ (USA) with 48 passengers and 3 crew, was in the initial climb out of Montreal's runway 24L when the left hand engine ingested a bird. The engine rolled back and then spooled back up to normal operation. An odour briefly developed on board, the crew turned off the #1 bleed air and the odour dissipated. The crew declared Mayday, turned both ignition switches on and initiated an immediate return to Montreal for a safe landing on runway 24L about 10 minutes after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance performed a compressor wash along with a borescopic inspection of the engine, the damage was found within limits and the aircraft was returned to service.
