A Skywest Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of United, registration N908SW performing flight OO-5228/UA-5228 from Columbia,MO to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) with 52 people on board, was enroute at FL270 about 70nm southwest of Bloomington,IL (USA) when the crew needed to shut an engine (CF34) down. The crew decided to divert to Bloomington, however, due to weather were unable to approach the airport and decided to divert to Peoria,IL, however, were unable to land in Peoria, too. The crew set course for Champaign,IL but then again diverted to Bloomington where the aircraft finally landed safely about 30 minutes after leaving FL270.

The distance between Bloomington and Peoria is about 36nm, between Bloomington and Champaign about 40nm.

A passenger reported the captain announced they had lost an engine. They subsequently diverted to Bloomington, while descending they encountered severe turbulence, the crew aborted the approach and diverted to Peoria but was unable to land in Peoria, too, and returned to Bloomington. About 5 minutes prior to landing the flight attendant instructed passengers to brace and continued "yelling" until after the aircraft came to a stop following a rough landing.

The airline reported the crew received a mechanical indication and diverted due to "an overabundance of caution, rather than an active threat to the plane."
