A LAN Argentina Airbus A320-200, flight 4M-4276 from Buenos Aires Newbery,BA to Neuquen,NE (Argentina), was descending towards Neuquen when a flight attendant noticed a sleeping male passenger was shivering and asked a doctor on board to have a look. Upon arrival of the doctor the passenger woke up and half wake punched the flight attendant. The flight crew continued the flight to Neuquen for a safe landing, police took the passenger, his son and the flight attendant to the police station for interviews.

The return flight was cancelled due to lack of cabin crew.

The passenger's son reported that his father was wearing a heart monitoring device similiar to a defibrillator which would shock his father as soon as his heart rate climbs above 200 beats per minute. That shock would not only return his father's heart to a normal condition, but could also cause some unwanted violent movements. He believed the shivering and the punch were related to that monitor's activity returning his father's heart to a normal beat rate. His father did not remember the incident, had no reason for an attack, was very sorry for the punch and had full understanding for the flight attendant's position.

Police reported that the flight attendant could not return to duty for the return flight as result of the punch. The man wears a built in defibrillator compensating severe cardiac dysrhythmia by electrical discharges.
