A KLM Boeing 737-900, registration PH-BXP performing flight KL-1662 from Barcelona,SP (Spain) to Amsterdam (Netherlands) with 157 passengers and 6 crew, had completed an uneventful flight with a landing on Amsterdam's runway 18C at 08:40L (06:40Z) and reached its gate D2 just below Amsterdam's Panaroama Deck at 08:50L.

At 10:11L, while ground workers were working in a cargo hold, a worker reported feeling ill due to fumes in the cargo hold, which prompted a first response by emergency services, at 10:35L emergency services upgraded the alert to hazardeous materials involved, the Panorama Deck and a number of gates of Terminal D were evacuated.

Emergency services report a passenger and the ground worker were taken to a hospital. The fumes appear to be coming from a leaking suitcase, the obviously organic substance is not yet known.

It is not yet known, which flight PH-BXP should have performed next, it is noteworthy however that flight KL-1779 to Hamburg (Germany), scheduled to leave Amsterdam at 10:45L, departed at 13:08L flown by a Boeing 737-800 registration PH-BXE.

The airline reported the ground worker suffered from irritations of mucous membranes including eye and mouth irritations. No passengers were affected by the fumes. A leaking barrel in the cargo hold was identified as cause of the fumes, the barrel was removed and the aircraft was cleaned. Luggage on board has been offloaded as well and is being cleaned. A number of gates and the Panorama Deck (observation platform) were closed as a precaution, the airport operation remained largely unaffected however. The worker has been discharged from hospital again.
