A UTAir Boeing 737-500, registration VQ-BJP performing flight UT-456 from Nojabrxsk to Moscow Vnukovo (Russia), was enroute at FL340 about 110nm northnortheast of Khanti-Mansiysk (Russia) when the crew received indication of a problem with the air conditioning system and descended the aircraft to FL300, then FL280. About 25 minutes after leaving FL340, now about 100nm westnorthwest of Khanty-Mansiysk the crew decided to divert to Khanty-Mansiysk, descended the aircraft to FL100 levelling off at FL100 about 10 minutes after leaving FL280, and landed safely on Khanty-Mansiysk's runway 06 about 75 minutes after leaving FL340.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, the passengers rebooked onto other flights.

The airline reported a sensor in the air conditioning system malfunctioned.

Ural's Investigation Department of Transport opened an incident investigation.
