A Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800, registration VH-VUM performing flight DJ-913 from Sydney,NS to Brisbane,QL (Australia), was enroute at FL390 about 120nm south of Brisbane near Evans Head,NS (Australia), when the aircraft reached the top of descent at 08:28L (22:28Z Sep 27th) and the crew requested descent and standard arrival procedure, which was met by a puzzled "please advise your position" by the air traffic controller. It was then discovered that the details of the flight were inadvertently inhibited on ATC's radar display. The display was restored, the aircraft continued for a safe landing on Brisbane's runway 01 about 25 minutes later.

The ATSB reported the details of the flight on the radar display had been inhibited for about 30 minutes starting at 07:59L (21:59Z Sep 27th), which puts the point of loss of radar display about 35nm north of Sydney when the aircraft climbed through FL180. The ATSB opened an occurrence investigation stating that separation assurance was lost.

Airservices Australia, Australia's ATC provider, reported that radar contact was never lost, the aircraft was still being displayed on radar however without details and all additional layers of safety like ground based short term collision alert and onboard TCAS were still fully functional.

The airline said they were taking the air traffic control breach very seriously, their crew however are trained to deal with it. The aircraft was not in the proximity of any other aircraft at any time, all onboard systems including TCAS were functional.
