An Iberia Airbus A340-300, registration EC-GUP performing flight IB-6463 from Madrid,SP (Spain) to Quito (Ecuador) with 285 passengers, was in the initial climb out of Madrid's runway 36L when the aircraft ingested a small bird into one of its engines (CFM56). The crew initially decided to continue the flight, after levelling off at cruise level 310 the crew however decided to return to Madrid, dumped fuel and landed safely on Madrid's runway 32L about 2 hours after departure.

A replacement Airbus A340-300 registration EC-GHX is estimated to reach Quito as flight IB-643R with a delay of 4.5 hours.
