A Piedmont Embraer ERJ-145 on behalf of American Airlines, registration N639AE performing flight PI-4840/AA-4840 from Harrisburg,PA to Charlotte,NC (USA), was climbing out of Harrisburg when the crew stopped the climb at 16,000 feet due to problems with the cabin pressure, descended the aircraft to 10,000 feet and diverted the aircraft to Washington Dulles,DC (USA), where the aircraft landed about 50 minutes after departure. Three passengers were taken to a hospital with ear pain and bleeding.

Passengers reported ground personnel needed to "wrestle" the door open after landing, a sudden wind rush occurred when the door finally opened. Many passengers were screaming in pain.

One passenger reported the health problems got worse in the following days resulting in a complete loss of hearing. According to the passenger's doctor the eardrum was punctured and became seriously infected.

Another passenger reported a dull pain in the left ear becoming increasingly worse.

A third passenger reported: "Plane had emergency landing due to air cabin pressure problems. We sit in the plane for 45 minutes at the gate, 20 of which the power was off with no air flow bc they couldn’t depressurize. Now a handful of us sit waiting in excess of 40 minutes to see a medic... one woman bleeding from her mouth."

The airline reported the aircraft diverted because of a mechanical issue. They are in touch with the passengers doing everything they can do to assist.

The airport reported the aircraft diverted due to a problem with the cabin pressure.
