An Alitalia Airbus A330-200, registration EI-EJI performing flight AZ-790 (dep Sep 26th) from Rome (Italy) to Beijing (China), was on approach to Beijing at about 08:10L (00:10Z) when the crew aborted the approach due to weather conditions, that had deteriorated below minima at about 08:00L. The crew reported they had 45 minutes of fuel remaining until cutting into final reserve, but needed to divert to Hohhot which required an estimated 55 minutes of flight. The crew declared emergency, received direct vectors, was cleared for the optimum flight level as identified by the crew, and was vectored to a safe landing at Hohhot 47 minutes after the crew declared Mayday.

The aircraft departed Hohhot after about 5 hours on the ground and reached Beijing with a delay of 8 hours. The return flight AZ-791D departed Beijing the following day, is currently (Sep 28th 14:15Z) enroute near Novosibirsk (Russia) and is estimated to reach Rome with a total delay of 31 hours.
