An Air Algerie Boeing 737-800, registration 7T-VKA performing flight AH-6231 from Tamanrasset to Algiers (Algeria), was descending towards Algiers, that was covered in fog and visibility of 100 meters. Although all other aircraft had diverted, the crew decided to perform a CATII autoland approach to Algiers' runway 09, the approach legally required a visibility of 800 meters and a RVR of 550 meters. The NOTAMs in addition prohibited the use of the autopilot within 5nm from the threshold of runway 09. The aircraft intercept the ILS 09 and tracked parallel to the localizer slightly to the right of the extended runway centerline, touched down ahead of the threshold on the paved surface of the runway end safety area to the right of the extended runway centerline and took out a number of runway end and runway edge lights during the resulting roll out at 03:25L (02:25Z). No injuries occurred, the aircraft received damage to the tyres, several runway lights were taken out.

The incident aircraft was able to resume service 8 hours later.

Radar data confirm the aircraft landed short of the runway threshold and close to the extended right hand edge of the runway.
