A Calm Air Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-200, registration C-FINB performing flight MO-771 from Winnipeg,MB to Sudbury,ON (Canada) with 4 crew, had just levelled off at cruise altitude when the low oil pressure indicator for the left hand engine (PW124B) started to flicker. The crew worked the related low oil pressure checklist, observed that the oil pressure continued to decrease and decided to shut the engine down. The crew advised ATC and returned to Winnipeg for a safe landing.

The Canadian TSB reported that a subsequent inspection of the aircraft revealed the oil cap for the #1 engine had not been properly secured. Maintenance checked the chip detectors and oil filters with no anomaly found, competed ground runs with no fault and returned the aircraft to service.
