A Delta Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N6704Z performing flight DL-1601 from Minneapolis,MN to Anchorage,AK (USA) with 189 people on board, was enroute at FL340 about 100nm northwest of Fargo,ND (USA) when the crew reported the smell of smoke in the cockpit, turned around and diverted to Fargo for a safe landing about 25 minutes later.

A replacement Boeing 757-300 registration N582NW positioned to Fargo, continued the flight and reached Anchorage with a delay of 6 hours.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 18 hours, then positioned out of Fargo to Minneapolis.
