A Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration VN-A353 performing flight VN-1612 from Pleiku to Hanoi (Vietnam), was on final approach to Hanoi's runway 11L with a low time first officer flying the aircraft fully manually (autopilot and autothrust off). The first officer had difficulty maintaining localizer and glideslope as well as maintaining speed, the captain provided instructions to correct, the corrections made by the first officer were insufficient however. The speed decayed and the rate of descent increased, in the flare the first officer applied a large nose up input to arrest the descent, the aircraft nonetheless touched down very firmly with the tail contacting the runway surface at 11:08L (04:08Z). The aircraft rolled out without further incident, the crew was unaware of the tail strike and taxied the aircraft to the gate, where ground personnel discovered the damage to the tail. There were no injuries, the aircraft sustained substantial structural damage to sections 17 and 18.

The aircraft returned to service on Jun 17th 2018, more than 2.5 months after the accident.

On Jul 21st 2018 The Aviation Herald received additional information indicating that the aircraft was descending at about 125 KIAS, 700 fpm sink rate and about 5 degrees nose up until 100 feet AGL, then the pitch angle increased to 7 degrees (for flare) and the speed began to decay, about 1-2 seconds prior to touchdown the speed reached 112 KIAS, the pitch angle rapidly increased from 7 degrees to 10.2 degrees nose up, both pilots provided strong nose up inputs, the aircraft touched down at +2.2G (last sink rate reading 500 fpm), bounced briefly and settled normally again at about +1.2G and about 9.9 degrees nose up.
