A China Southern Boeing 757-200, registration B-2859 performing flight CZ-6001 from Urumqi (China) to Moscow Sheremetyevo (Russia), was enroute near Astana (Kazakhstan) when the crew decided to divert to Astana reporting a minor technical problem. The aircraft landed safely in Astana.

A replacement Boeing 757-200 reached Moscow the following day with a delay of 18 hours.

A passenger reported the aircraft was enroute about 3 hours into the flight when the aircraft rapidly descended. The captain made an announcement some time later they would land in 10 minutes due a minor technical problem. The passenger became aware of their landing airport only after reading Astana at the terminal building. No emergency services attended the aircraft. Passengers were told a replacement aircraft would continue the flight the following morning, however, no accomodation was provided with the argument of visa difficulties for Chinese passengers in Kazakhstan. An airline representative later told passengers an engine had a problem. The replacement aircraft brought along mechanics and spare parts, the mechanics immediately began working on the right hand engine. The replacement aircraft departed Astana about 3 hours after arrival in Astana and reached Moscow with a delay of 18 hours.
