A Westjet Encore de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration C-GJEN performing flight WS-3161 from Vancouver,BC to Nanaimo,BC (Canada) with 57 passengers and 4 crew, was enroute at 4000 feet MSL about 5 minutes prior to estimated landing when smoke entered cockpit and cabin. The aircraft continued to Nanaimo for a safe landing on runway 16 and stopped on the runway. A rapid disembarkation followed, the passengers were taken to the terminal.

The Canadian TSB reported a team of investigators have been dispatched on site.

Passengers reported there was an odour like burning oil or burning electrical components.

The airline reported smoke appeared in cockpit and cabin just prior to landing, the crew declared emergency, after landing the passengers were evacuated from the aircraft. A maintenance inspection is under way.

On Jun 29th 2018 the TSB reported that a tear down of the engine revealed the 2.5 bearing carbon seal had failed which allowed turbine oil to enter the air conditioning system. The TSB have opened a class 4 (limited scope) investigation into the occurrence.
