A Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N173DZ performing flight DL-256 from Sao Paulo,SP (Brazil) to Detroit,MI (USA) with 209 passengers and 11 crew, was climbing out of Sao Paulo when the crew declared emergency reporting a flap malfunction and requesting an immediate fuel dump. The aircraft levelled off at FL120 and entered a hold for about 40 minutes, then entered another hold at FL110 for about 70 minutes and returned to Sao Paulo's Guarulhos runway 09L about 150 minutes after departure.

It turned out that the aircraft had blown a tyre upon departure the debris of which had damaged the flaps.

Passengers reported they heard a bang during departure, the aircraft soon after stopped the climb and entered a hold.
