An Edelweiss Airbus A320-200, registration HB-IJW performing flight WK-402 from Zurich (Switzerland) to Pristina (Kosovo), was climbing through about FL300 out of Zurich when an unusual odour was observed on board of the aircraft, a number of occupants developed headaches and tingling feelings in arms and legs. The flight crew donned their oxygen masks and decided to return to Zurich for a safe landing on runway 34 about 45 minutes after departure. All crew members were sent to medical services for assessment.

The aircraft had undergone an engine wash the previous night, which had to be performed outdoors. Due to the low temperatures glycol had been added to water used for the engine wash. Glycol vapours are known to cause headaches and dizziness.

The aircraft was checked, traces of glycol were detected and cleaned, then the aircraft was returned to service and was able to perform the rotation to Pristina with a delay of 8 hours.
