An Air Algerie Boeing 737-600, registration 7T-VJT performing flight AH-4016 from Algiers (Algeria) to Beirut (Lebanon) with 47 passengers, was enroute about 30 minutes into the flight when the crew decided to return to Algiers due to a problem with the air conditioning system, the passenger oxygen masks were released. The aircraft landed safely back in Algiers about one hour after departure.

Algeria's media reported one of the engines (CFM56) was on fire, the passenger oxygen masks were released to prevent smoke entering the aircraft cabin.

The airline reported the aircraft returned to Algiers due to a minor problem with the air conditioning system as a precaution and stated, there had been no engine fire whatsoever other than Algerian media had reported.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration 7T-VKE reached Beirut with a delay of 5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 5.5 hours, then returned to service.
